New gtx 680

A lot of people will miss this and just think the 680 is 3x better than 580. Pure marketing win.

Considering that the Octane build for 680 gave worse performance than a 460 and an optimized build + drivers probably won't give 100% better performance, the GTX 680 should be in fact called something like GTX 665 or 670 at the very best.

Different posts and replies of you experienced Octane users make me want to go for the 580, especialy the 3gb version.
I posted my Q about what configuration (motherboard) to go for in another forumsection:

I would be very glad with some help/advice about a good combination of motherboard/4x gpu (2or3Gb?) and more...?

You mean like having a 700 Cores on a Fermi card?..well.that would be something..kind 50% faster than my GTX470

As a matter of fact, the 680 is like Fermi with 768 CUDA cores.


Fermi gtx580:
512 cuda cores at 1544 MHz (so called hotclocks, 2x 772 MHz, which is the frequency of the rest of the GPU core)


Kepler gtx680:
1536 cores at 1006 MHz (no hotclocks)

If gtx680 was like Fermi though, kept the hotclocks, it would look like this:

1536/2= 768 cuda cores at 2012 MHz

Obviously, there are other things coming into equation, like missing hardware scheduler on 680 (which is apparently thing needed for gpgpu), superscalar nature of the chip (unproportional number of so called warp schedulers compared to number of CUDA blocks), or even currently unoptimised version of Octane....
but what i said about those CUDA cores is true, even if the performance is not currently there (and maybe never will be)

Bit unrelated to gtx680, but there is new info on "Big Kepler"...apparently, on the upcoming GTC conference in the middle of May Nvidia is going to introduce the new Tesla card, which is supposed to have 7 !!! Billions of Transistors....that means 2x as much as the gtx680 gpu core... wonder, whether this means 2x as much Cuda Cores (3072) or its going to be somewhat lower number (like 2304) and the rest of the transistors will be dedicated to the gpgpu related stuff. Hopefully this will show up as a geforce as well, ideally in a dual GPU version :twisted:

Has the development team already acquired a gtx680? I am really looking forward to a fair comparison (ie. with the next version of octane).

If you could get the 680 for less than the 7970 and only intend to keep the card for a year or two id say go for it GTX 680 otherwise id go 7970. Is there still a need to do a reformat when switching between Nvidia/ATi like the old days?
