I also do not support this type of anti piracy protection.
I made a stand years ago not to use/get copies of softw/dvds/mp3's or whatever and if I can afford/want something I'll pay for it, if not, well I don't get it. Like I can't afford 3DS Max so I dont have it, But I can afford modo so I bought a license and use it.
If the darn thing worked like a lot of others, ie you can only activate the softw by obtaining a license eg only available from the softw provider, well thats cool or perhaps if it checked on startup i guess thats tolerable, but to be totally dependant on being online all the time to use it NO!.
I know that there may be some advantages, eg always up to date, the latest content etc, but imho these far outweigh the issues of being dependant on the internet connection for use. Yes, I am like others i-net disadvantaged due where I live and what I can access, how much data I can download/upload.

Sh..t it's a fantastic program.. and I really like it, but to be dead honest, if this requirement was existant when I purchased it, I would probably have thought a lot harder about purchasing it and may not have.

If it auto updates, there may be issues with legacy files. I know already that some newer versions of Octane cannot open older versions, or vice versa. I have a similar issue with my CAD package, I am very strict with which version I use with which client (dependant on their install). If things happened automatically, it would be shit hitting the fan time. Anyway, all speculation, so Im going to sit back and enjoy the thread.

've found quotes from the sites where the break
many people understand that you can not break the product!

"Come on people lets leave politics to the stupid governments. Lets crack this shit and test it out. I don't think its gonna harm Radiance, in fact this will help to promote octane, coz some of us students once we graduate we will encourage our future employers to BUY octane.....it's a cycle. CRACK this shit."

" It would be very decent of us as pirates to leave Octane Render alone for sometime. Radiance, founder of Octane just started, it has been 2 months and it would really kill the project if we start using the cracked version. Radiance is a nice guy, let's give him a break for sometime. "

Hi Guys,

A lot of people here are still not understanding where i've said.
We have not delayed 2.3 to implement an anti-piracy software, in fact we are not implementing any anti-piracy system, like ubi-soft or anything else people have talked about here.

2.3 will need a network connection, not as an anti-cracking measure, but for new functionality, which at the same time makes cracked copies of octane useless.

I'm sorry if there are a few people here that don't like it, but as said, we have no choice. If you want to complain go complain on the websites where all the cracks and torrents are posted. If we continue without this new trend, octane render will not make it to it's maturity.

Yours,
Radiance

I understand that you want to avoid that your software is being stolen(I know you say it's a new feature, but it's one of the points with it). But I’m afraid that your solution is going to create more problems:
- I don’t know much about hacking software, but I’m quite sure that people who do, isn’t going to be stop by your solution(I have hear of people who played a cracked version of world of warcraft and steam)
- You might lose user (and money) because it’s more difficult to use the software(Some people don’t have access to the internet)
- You have used more time on trying to fight the pirates, and you will never win :(
I will look forward to 2.3, and hope this won’t be happing with Octane render…

I am sorry I am getting confused.
You have this new scheme which isnt anti-piracy but is anti-piracy.

Do you require Octane users to be connected to your server each time they render and for the duration of the render?

The people speaking out about your solution are people who will have difficulty with making/keeping a connection for one practical reason or another.
Thats quite reasonable IMO.

I don't understand:

you ONLY need to be online when you launch octane. so if you lose connection during rendering octane will NOT fail?

I hope it will be an alternative offline version of Octane which i can update manually or some kind of it. If not - it will be very sad to don`t use it as my main render for serios projects, coz my inet provider and other sorts of forcemajors. And Octane will become just funny online game after work.

Internet depending of Octane - its not a weapon against piracy (they will crack it anyway just for sport). Its some sort of limits for normal users who bought or think to buy it in future.

Yes, but you really need to look at this from an economic perspective. Just read the responses in this thread, most people aren't happy about the system.

The requirement of an internet connection WILL lose customers, in fact it will probably lose most of the big ones (studios). And I would assume that most of those who have pirated Octane in the past will not buy it even when there's no pirated version anymore. These people just want something to play around with, and they'll find something else that's free.

I am pretty much convinced that this does more harm than good. The negative response in this thread paints a clear picture. Serious studios won't even consider Octane.
