Any news on the progress of this plugin?

A timetable maybe? Will we need to wait months? Years?

also:

Will this require a special Blender build or will it function as a typical addon / plugin?

Seriously, I fail to see the point of this thread.

If it's supposed to tease a bit and to check the reaction, then it should say so from the start so others could get the word going.

If it's supposed to properly estimate the number of users that would buy this, then a sort of prepurchase should be available, maybe even in the kickstarter spirit that if it doesn't reach a certain number it won't go further.

If it's purpose is (as I understood from the first post) to inform us of the state of development for this software, I have to say I find it ridiculous and offensive the lack of feedback from the development team (or in this case only-member?). Seriously, it takes max 5 min to at least post something like: work is advancing at a steady pace but we still can't give an estimate on when or how this will be available.

We announced that the blender plug-in is in development, which I am pretty sure everyone wanted to be informed about as soon as we found the right developer and got this process started. As a rule we only announce a plug-in when it had reached the stage where we know it is viable and the developer has a basic working alpha version.

Some plug-ins take longer to get into beta, and this is one of them. Please be patient, thank you.

Thanks for the update, can't wait for the beta to happen. I really want to use Blander/Octane for animation some day after I take 3d animation in my school. I really would not want to use Octane-Blender as my workflow for animation the way the exporter is right now >.>

Yes, eventually even death. :D

Seriously, tho, I would really like to know if we will need a special Blender build that will contain this (deep?) integration, or it will be possible to interface Octane through a standard plugin, activated from the settings and applicable to / usable by every Blender build? Blender users change versions very often and the former solution could be very clumsy.

I would assume that it is somewhere in the middle. Blender will continue to develop and the plugin will have to develop along side it. I am sure that Octane integration won't be too close to the front of the Blender developers minds when they produce new features. So the plugin will have to adapt to include these new features.

Blender is probably unique in that it does develop so quickly. Do other packages have nightly/hourly builds being released?

Sadly, Blender does not have enough API exposed to the external plugins to implement all the features you will need when using Octane... So, Octane plugin can be implemented only the way Cycles is - as internal module.
