First of thanks developers for the input I really would love to see R.Edges succeed or less problematic than current state.
and thanks for guys bringing energy to this silly debate.

I'll also would like to put my last point here if that's ok. I do not know much about others workflows and how they deal with CAD models. I'll share my perspective on this.

CAD modelers might say that adding fillets bevels might be easy to do etc.

I can say that you know nothing about how clients share their precious IP with third parties. How artists are dealing with those models to produce a good viz.
I'm not a CAD modeler. The fact for me, my clients and for the studios I work with is roughly the same.

Which is, CAD models coming from premium clients are usually collapsed meshes of CAD models. So they are no where editable Nurbs and such. Most clients use high end softwares and some with proprietary format models specially tailored for their factory production line. Even they did gone berserk and share an editable CAD with you. But you coudn't open it them in any software.

So the converted obj models will seem like messed up polygons in some way. But renders just fine.
And simply there comes the need for Round edges.
It's not meant for adding some bevel to a sharp box object that you need to smooth corners.

Likewise some local companies might have no problem sharing the original CAD file, modeled in known cad software. Thus giving formats that we can actually edit like in rhino, Iges format and such... But those under strict NDA's .

For those who have no joy in life can go away and enjoy modeling their beveled edges as much as they like.

As an update on the matter: We plan to release a test build this week with the first stage of the rounded edges overhaul. It's basically trying to improve the current system as much as possible by improving the edge detection in the geometry compilation and improving the rendering of rounded edges. Arturo started working on a new approach to rendering, but at this point in time it is currently more research than development. I think in the next 1-2 weeks we will know if that approach is feasible or not.
Progress is good! I will never complain about that!

Thanks for the update

Hi everyone,

We have made a new test release that includes some improvements in how rounded edges are calculated so feel free to give it a try:

Note that this is not the final version that will be included in v3.1 but it should be a significant improvement in many cases.
