I think this not so good idea, I can not guarantee Internet my stable.
Any software, there will always be crack, this is a worldwide problem.

I think you more energy and time on the development of octane, Let more robust to octane,
more complex to use, the less the user.
Any use complex software is unpopular, I think you understand this principle.

Let's wait and see. The real test is going to come when we have the software. Almost all internet connections go up and down, so either it will be an issue, or it won't. I think it depends on the implementation.

Radiance: Thanks for communicating with us (even though it creates a lot of flak). I appreciate understanding your thought process. I hope we can avoid jumping to conclusions before we've seen the actual solution and given it a bit of time to mature.

Just as what a lot here have asked, will it stop working if the internet connection drops? Because if it does, it's a big bummer. I don't want to be negative here, I'll check how this pans out...but I do understand the frustration of many here, especially with restricted internet access.

Out of curiosity, how much bandwidth will be needed here? If we need constant connection, what data does the software transmit to the server and back? (besides updates perhaps)

This new security system is a novel idea... reminds me about the first time I read about Octane... seems to good to be true... there has to be problems with this... right?

Maybe... but remember, this software is freaking awesome!!! And these are smart people behind its development... I'm sure they won't ruin it. As Radiance said - they've put a lot of thought behind this.

Let's all wait and see how it is going to work. I bet we'll all be blown away... kind of like the first time you used Octane - only better.

I certainly have no issues with that and welcome the network connection.
Just one concern, what will happen in the middle of rendering and my connection went down?

For what I understand, is that OC will constantly call back home to check the legitimacy of the software.

What about when you launch OC, first thing calls home, check with the home server for legitimacy and full stop.
If someone is using an already serial, only then the server would stop the software?

Just an idea though.

Anyways, I'm in unlimited internet connection 24/7, so I'm good with this.

I somehow find it amusing that you told me to "take it easy" about piracy issues a couple weeks ago but when you are personally concerned, such a protection is developped...

It sure explains why we didn't get any update for quite some time now. Honestly, I find this situation disappointing. You've invested development time in some protection system that is very similar to the new Ubisoft system: you have to be online ALL THE TIME to be able to use the software. Well, it only benefits Refractive Software and once the program will have been cracked, legitimate users will be the only ones to suffer from this "protection".

If Ubisoft hasn't been unable to satisfy its legitimate customers, I don't see how you could. From my experience, it only made the gaming experience worse. And there is nothing more frustrating than being unable to use some program because of something you can't control. Ubisoft sure said they had lots of servers but reality has been quite different. Furthermore, I don't see any benefit for the legitimate customers. If you were to add an online material library or some shared libraries that could only be accessed by registered members then I would say yes. I wish you'll not shoot yourself in the foot because if you're planning to "stop" piracy you're going to be very disappointed...

Considering Octane Render requires very specific hardware in order to work, its piracy rate can not be higher than other rendering software. I wish you'll reconsider if people have issues when testing the next 2.3 version.

Hi Radiance,

This is a very bad new for me.

Imagine, I live in a mountain country south of France, I have had numerous problems with my connection, already 17 days without internet connection since the beginning of this years due to stormy weather condition. Each time a lightning hits a transmission relay I have to wait till 5 days until they fix it.

So Imagine !

I would like to tell you that the very same system has been use by game company like Ubisoft that raised a lot of criticisms among loyal players, check it out and you will see.
That system did not prevent piracy of their games.

A lot of companies had adopted an another system which consist in an initial connection with the company sever and after that you are able to play without it. You have to connect only for updates.

Why not use that system ?

Here once again, in my case, it is the loyal customer that pay the burden.

Best regards,

David.
