Thanks for the new version, but it crashes on me when I try to render hair.

I tried a couple of styles, both with 50,000 hairs and it crashed almost as soon as I pressed Ctrl-Shift-R. It wouldn't have even had time to fully load the model. I then tried with a simple sphere and 5,000 hairs and that rendered OK, but when I then increased the hair count to 25,000, it crashed again.

Great news!
Could it be, that Octane Hair is not working wit replication?

It is crashing somewhere inside the octane API so it is going to take longer to track down. My suggestion for now is don't model hair with the Octane Viewport open.

Crash report. I'm still on 2.23.0073.

Happened when testing particle emitter (a new area for me).
Medium scale scene has - basic cam/light, primitive plane. primitive icosahedron. Particle emitter, set to object, with icosahedron added.
Scene is otherwise simulating particle emission normally. OR4C is also nicely and speedily rendering emitted primitive object animation, very responsive.

After a few seemingly random 'error popup crashes' I backed up the above basic test scene as a group into Browser: My Objects.
Isolated so far...when in
  • Assembly room, or4c open, group, then drag drop plane+emitter to Browser, error popup, crash.
  • Model room, or4c open, simulating emitter no issue, but when I double particle/s count, add total particle, error-popup, crash.
Crash as in total Carrara crash to close, not a freeze.
I have not played with particle emitter prior to latest OR4C version so am not certain if this is a hidden or new issue.
Will continue to test that scene and isolate the causes.

Cheers

New update posted to this thread. I can't get it to crash any more with this version but I'm not the hair expert. :D

Hi Sighman, I downloaded and installed the latest update, loaded a scene with hair (50,000 hairs and 20 segments) and tried to render with Octane. It got as far as opening the Octane viewport and "Compiling Mesh" message and then a window popped up "Carrara 8 has stopped working", with the only option available to close the program. This is pretty much as before. For clarity, it did not only crash for me with the modelling window open, it crashed with any reasonable number of hairs.

I did a separate test and started with 5000 hairs and 4 segments, which rendered OK. I built up to 20000 hairs and 10 segments, which also rendered OK, but when I went from that to 20000 hairs and 12 segments (or 24000 hairs and 10 segments), it crashed. At no point was the hair modelling window open for these tests when rendering.

Looks like I'm not pushing the limits enough. I'll try it again. :?

There has been some discussion on the DAZ thread about hair strands rendering thicker in Octane than in Carrara for the same settings. Would it be possible to reduce the thickness a little (maybe by around 20%) so that the two match better between the two programs?
