Hi, I have had Octane Renderer for a couple of days, so any of my observations might easily be user errors. Anyway here are my observations using Octane 1.23.0.12 and Poser Pro 2014:

Loading a pose does not refresh the viewport even though Auto refresh is on.

Non reproducable: I got a message box named “DAZ Studio”: “Exception in OctaneRender for Poser objectsAdded” the first time I loaded a pose.

If I click on “Stop all scene and setting updates from restarting octane” and then click on “Refresh the Octane scene from poser” I get a garbled scene in the viewport.
Shouldn’t it refresh the scene when I actively ask for it by pressing the button?
Even if it shouldn’t, its very confusing what is happening, it took me a while to figure out that I had disabled scene updating and that was the reason for the strange view.

The following message is shown in red for a short while at the top of the viewport window whenever I press “Refresh the Octane scene from Poser”:
“Warning: Low video card memory. Memory available: 0MB”
Image file statistics tells me that I have 17/144 RGBA textures, 16/68 Grayscale textures and require 565.8MB texture memory. I use a GTX760, it should have 4 GB memory.

I bought Octane 2 days ago, so I am not really using it fully yet. Currently I still make material changes in poser. I tried to change a material in poser. It shows up as changed in the poser view, but I cannot figure out how to get this change to Octane. Auto refresh doesn’t update the material neither does “Refresh Octane Scene from Poser”, How can I force changes in poser to update the materials in Octane?

I wish I would be able to zoom in the viewport. Currently I have to write a picture file, then open it to zoom.

Hi. If you are just starting with the plugin, the STABLE version might be a better entry point - since it is very robust, and won't have an issues whilst you are learning what it can do.
Loading a pose does not refresh the viewport even though Auto refresh is on.
I just checked this and it is working OK on my system. Are you able to provide any more details on this pls?
Non reproducable: I got a message box named “DAZ Studio”: “Exception in OctaneRender for Poser objectsAdded” the first time I loaded a pose.
I have had another reported of this - but cannot reproduce it. If you have steps that always reproduce it - pls let me know what they are and I will fix it.

Fixed in the next version. Thanks for pointing this one out.

Once a Poser material has been converted to an Octane material, changes to the Poser material are not transferred to the Octane material (because they might wipe the Octane material settings you wanted to keep). You can reconvert a single material, all the materials for a prop or figure, or all materials for the entire scene via the Materials tab in the plugin (rightclick menu item "Reconvert from Poser"). http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Poser/?page_id=61.
I wish I would be able to zoom in the viewport. Currently I have to write a picture file, then open it to zoom.
The best option at the moment is to switch to another Poser camera (Aux Camera) and zoom in to the relevant part of the scene with that camera, then change back to the Main Camera when needed. Or take a screenshot and paste into Gimp.

Hi Paul,

Please put the zoom feature on a requested feature list somewhere :)

Here is how I can reproduce some of the errors:

1. Start Poser 2014. Andy2 shows up.
2. Choose "Render/OctaneRender" click ok to the messagebox then click "Open Viewport".
Then click Auto Refresh, so it is ON
3. Drag one of his arms, so his pose changes. The Octane view also updates
4. Go to the Pose tab in the pose library and click on "+".
5. Enter a set name (I used "Test") and press ok.
6. In the next window, do not set checkmarks at either Morph Channels nor Body transformation.
Just click ok.
7. Choose "Single Frame" and press Ok
8. At this point, I get an exception: "Exception in OctaneRender for Poser objectAdded".
Close the log window
9. Drag the figure again and see the Octane View change.
10. Click on the pose you just created. Notice that the figure changes pose in Poser, but not in Octane even though Auto Refresh is on.

Hope this helps,
Helge

Just tried this on the next version and didn't get the error - so hopefully fixed now.

I have updated the installer at the top of this thread with:

1.23.0.13
- Suppressed the "Low Memory" warning that was popping up momentarily at the start of a render
- Fixed issue where Refreshing when the Lock Changes button was enabled cause the camera scale to be incorrect
- Fixed error in the way emitter nodes were being created, which caused the emission material to be invalid, and a cuda error from the Create Emitters from Lights script

Anyone using emitters needs to update to this version from 1.23.0.12 due to the third item above.

Thanks

Hi Paul,
Firstly: 1.23.0.13 unfortunately did not fix the two issues I reported above (the exception and the fact that loading a pose does not update Octane).

New issue:
I am now trying to use "Reconvert Materials".
It seems that using this on a mesh or a material that I have changed does not update Octane fully. This only happens if I use Reconvert on the scene.
1. Load Poser
2. Start Octane
3. Change Environment/Power so Andy is visible and not just a silhouette.
4. Enter Poser Material room on Andy’s body and remove all nodes, then set Diffuce_Color to red
5. Right click and choose Reconvert on “Andy2 [Mesh]” in the materials tab. Note that Andy does not change color
6. Right click and choose Reconvert on “scene [Geometry Group]” and notice that Andy changes color

Another issue:
I have some trouble with the eyelashes on one of my figures.
The eyelashes is defined by a picture that is used both as image map for Diffuse_Color and as Transparency map for Transparency and Transparency_Edge in the Material room.
If the Diffuce_Color (which is connected to an image map node) is set to RGB 0,0,0. Then the result in Octane is wrong. The lashes are not black. If the color is set to anything that isn-t RGB 0,0,0 (e.g. 1,1,1), then the lashes are rendered correctly.
I can see that the resulting materials in Octane are totally different.
In the 0,0,0 case it creates a diffuse node based on the jpg file. In the non-0,0,0 case it creates a difuse multiply node with an underlying texture of the picture and another texture based on the non-zero color I used. I am not fluent enough in Octane yet to see what the problem exactly is.

Hopefully the following pictures are understandable:

Situation where lashes have wrong color (the Diffuse color in material is totally black):

Situation where lashes have correct color (the Diffuse color in material is not totally black):

As stated above - I am unable to reproduce the pose issue - are you able to provide more info pls? Does setting the pose of Andy produce the problem for you?

You are right - reconvert the scene, or reconvert a specific material is working, but not reconverting an entire prop/figure. I will fix this in the next release. As I said above - this is a test release - and these sort of problems are not present in 1.20a - however I am glad you are on 1.23.0.13, since it's helping locate the problems :-) But it's probably not the best introduction to the plugin for you.
I have some trouble with the eyelashes on one of my figures.
Fixed in the next release.

The Exception message "Exception in OctaneRender for Poser objectsAdded" is very reproducable for me:

Start Poser (which loads Andy),
go to Pose/Universal Poses/Action/Comic Book in the library
Double click on "Hero Action 01" and I get the exception.
It only happens once after the start of Poser.

The second issue (changing pose does not update Octane view even when Autorefresh is on) does not happen with the poses used above.
I have made a pose and put it in my dropbox, try with this one:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/771 ... ngPose.rar
Copy the pose to your content directory
Start poser and activate Octane
turn Auto refresh ON
click the pose and notice that Octane does not update the display.

It is not a big issue because I just can ask for a manual refresh. Its just strange that the automatic refresh does not work in this case.
As I said above - this is a test release - and these sort of problems are not present in 1.20a - however I am glad you are on 1.23.0.13, since it's helping locate the problems :-) But it's probably not the best introduction to the plugin for you.
No problem, I know it is a beta :)

What is the advantage of exporting to stand alone instead of plugin?
