Yes, I think it adds more realism but (as usual!) at the expense of render time.

I'm having a lot of problems setting the resolution on Displacement. It seems to allow only 2 settings, 256 and 1024. Any attempt to go higher is ignored. Also it seems that even when the setting is applied as 1024, the moment you move on to another node the displacement seems to default back to 256. Help is appreciated. Thanks.

New update posted to this thread. New settings for Cameras and Visible Environment.

Thanks for the update - how does the Visible Environment differ from using Carrara's Background, they seem essentially the same, although I suppose Visible Background could include procedural textures, etc. Maybe I have answered my own question! But a few words from the guru would be appreciated.

The visible environment does not provide any light. This allows you to use one HDRI to light your scene (a light box for example) and another to display in the background/reflections/retractions.

Ah, the light dawns! Thanks for that. I may be wrong but I thought you had fixed it that if your set a Backdrop (rather than a Background) in Carrara, that it would appear in the Octane render window, but this does not seem to be the case now. Am I remembering it wrong - always possible at my age! - or has disappeared somehow (or am forgetting to set something?).

Thanks for the update, Sighman.
Any luck on the displacement mapping resolution issue? I should probably add that the issue arises as a Mix material for skin. When using a Mix material it seems that the indidivual displacement nodes are ignored, and a we must instead use the displacement node of the mix material. I'm not currently getting the results I've expected. Any feedback or assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Sighman - not to worry about the backdrop issue - I have found the setting I needed!

It's probably not quite the answer you want, but have you tried setting up your required displacement with Carrara's displacement, which then gets passed to Octane as a modified mesh, thus bypassing Octane's displacement processing completely. There may be drawbacks to this (ie. size of mesh) but if you want a quick fix, this may help.

Any issue with the Octane displacement settings is likely to be an Octane issue and not a plugin issue. The best way to tell is to export your scene and load it into the standalone to see if the same thing happens. Then you can file an issue with the Octane development team. I know others have been having issues with Octane displacement.
