Hi guys, i think you're all mostly misunderstanding my post.
I can assure you that as a licensed customer, after the intermediate release (which will have a part of this system in it),
you will immediately love it, and realise it gives much more functionality to paying people than before.

We're not talking about a floating license check here, but a completely different way of working, which i've been carefully developing during the last months.

Instead of attacking the idea (please understand we have no other option if we want to stay in business by next year(), maybe try provide new ideas and ways we can enchance the use of octane with the new tightly webserver integrated octane...

Trust me, you will love the new system, it will blow our competition away in many areas.
As stenson wrote above, we will set a new trend with this.

Bad news. I can`t work with internet all the time. I can`t do my work for client because of my inet provider, cause its thunder and rain in the street, cause my internet is out of pay, and i have bad connection and allways crushes. And with all of that I cant use octane for work and hobby, but I bought it.

As for me, its not clever idea to connect work in Octane with inet.
Sorry for my Engl.

I also have bought 2 licenses of Octane. Now will my two licenses became almost useless?

For me it is a no-go to connect my 2 workstations with the internet. I have clients (government and industry) who
have strict NDAs (non disclosure agreement) in their contract. It must be dead sure that no one except myself
has access.

Yes, Murphys law would certainly be put in action just before deadline ;-)

The virtues of Octane will make it survive, not this piracy-thing.
I understand that piracy is a problem, but there are enough customers around willing to pay the price, which is not excessively high anyway.
I would love to buy a third one, but only without internet connection...

Holy S***
out of curiosity, I just tried a Google search for "octane render crack"... it seems you guys are having a lot of success among warez users
it's the price for success and a good product I'm afraid, but still I think it's a shame for such a cheap software (not that cracking Max is good, but they really don't have ANY kind of excuse for making this... wise people should understand that if a cheap software like Octane grows and take place in the industry, some of the big boys will have to reconsider their price policy to keep their market, no?)

sorry to say that radiance but it is a very² bad² idea !

i prefer to have a serial activation !!

look at the polemic with the system of ubisoft, 99 percent of the potential client insulting the editor because it choose the same system, (cracked in a week)... and it's only for video games !

please, forget this, or is that a joke or something like that ?

+ i DONT want to be the slave of a connection and especially for rendering !

it is the customer who clink...

...and this way you turn your back to the studio market, whereas I believed in the potential of octane for serious sectors, it's a shame

radiance I'm sorry can you clarify that-
Each time I open Octane I will have to connect to your server (or rather it 'phones home' automatically) to verify my license or it wont render? or does it need continuous connection while rendering?

At first reading it seems a little draconian and inconvenient but on reflection its *ok* for me, if it keeps Refractive alive. If I think about it I am actually usually connected to the internet while I have a render cooking although I surf on one pc and the pc I have Octane on only connects through ICS only if needed...

Would it be possible to just check in once every 12 hours?
That is it still phones home to verify the license initially but you can open and render off line freely unless time is up and then it must checkin again?
If the server hasnt heard from you then your license is suspended until you verify again.
Many of your customers will probably be behind business firewalls or have other limitations in getting access.
Perhaps there can be just a little practical flexibility in what you propose and it can still be effective?

Very bad news!

If you already took the decision to use that protection system, why asking for our suggestions?

1/ On earth, there is not only the USA ans Europe. Many countries do not have 24/7 internet connection or mobile internet or it is too expensive.

2/ Some users does not want to be connected, for confidentiality issues and not to be hacked themselves.

3/ Some employers do not provide internet on workstations to prevent employees from spending their time on facebook or downloading malicious stuff!

And many other reasons...

Sad to say this but I think some licensed customers will be constrained to ask for refund, and just go and use those cracked version!

I hope you will provide good solutions for these situations.

I get 40 GB on peak and 40 off peak.
With a connection of 5 Mb/s.
It would suck if im offline but that is when games come in ;)

For me the first question would be how much traffic new lic system generates per hour? I have 24/7 ADSL inet but for octane i would need to have backup inet connection over cellphone network which is very expensive for hi bandwith usage. My ISP can be very problematic from time to time in terms of stability so backup would be a must.

Cheers,
