Will the RTX 3080 work in Octane 4.05-R7?

What about 4.05? 2020 costs additional 700€ if you know.bepeg4d wrote:Hi,

Hi ivolodkov,
v4 is based on CUDA 10, while new Ampere RTX 30X0 GPUs need CUDA 11.2.
How could you think it could be updated?
It must be rewritten from scratch, and that has be done with v2020.2 SDK.
And, the license update does not cost 700€.
If you want to use new versions, you can purchase an annual Enterprise subscription update for 199€, but at the end of the annual maintenance, your licenses will go back to v4:
https://render.otoy.com/shop/upgrade.ph ... C67-UGAA1Y.
if you want to upgrade also your v4 perpetual licenses to perpetual v2020, the upgrading path is more expensive (349€ or 499€ depending from your previous updates), to know the exact price for your license, please visit the following link:
https://render.otoy.com/shop/upgrade.php
At the end of the annual maintenance, your licenses will stay to v2020.

Can you please advise, which of the various versions to get? I am about to finally upgrade to version higher than 4, to make my Ampere card to work, but all the options, rent, buy, upgrade, box, maintenance...it makes my head explode. I am looking for cheapest alternative possible (2 GPUs only), but preferably the perpetual one.bepeg4d wrote:Hi ivolodkov,

As i understand it currently:
1. i can subscribe the studio version for 199 EUROs a year, but after a year, it will stop working, and v4 for me only again, right?
2. there is a blue button in my profile´s Subscriptions - says Extend maintenance for licenses -> i click it, choose upgrade to 1 year Annual Maintenance for 199 EUROs - is this the same thing as 1.?
3. Then in the "Buy" section there is an option to Upgrade legacy V4 perpetual licenses to 2020 perpetual... it says Upgrade to Enterprise Upgrade + 1 year Annual maintenance for 499 EUROs. Do i understand this correctly now - thats 300 EUROs for the "ability" to keep 2020 version after the end of maintenance period + those 199 EUROs for that one year of maintenance, again the same thing as 1.? When that one year passes and i wont extend the maintenance, i will be left with functioning 2020.x instead of 4? - do i get that right?
I suppose there is no option like the upgrade to 2020 perpetual without that maintenance, like only 300 EUROs thing? 500 EUROs is kinda steep, heh. And i would be most likely OK with the 2020.2 or whatever it is i would get, as long as its supports Ampere and RTX and its stable, and could probably get away without what i assume is getting updated versions for the coming year, updates, which i maybe wont even need, cause i already have the functionality i need - hell, i would be OK with 4.05, if i was not forced to upgrade because of Ampere card purchase. But at least i finally get working RT, so its worth it.
Thanks

Hi Timmaigh!,
everything you have written is correct, with the exception that only the first perpetual license upgrade for v4 will cost 499€.
The next Annual Extension with Perpetual license upgrade will cost 349€, or 199€ if you prefer to stay with 2020 license at the end of the extension.

Thank you. I suppose i will go into that Studio subscription then. Actually, i tried yesterday already, but it wrote my card got declined, but then i found out my internet-banking to be down at that moment, so perhaps that was the reason. Cause it shows the card number now in my account payment specs and it says its valid.bepeg4d wrote:Hi Timmaigh!,

Going to try again now and see, hopefully it will work just fine.
One more question, i am used to use Octane standalone, never had any plugin. Now i am suppose, if i understand that correctly, i am going to get access to plugin, and no doubt it will have its benefits, the geometry instancing and whatnot. But i expect it will require bit of tinkering, to learn to use it integrated into modeling app - unless it opens some separate window looking completely like Standalone, from where i can do all the usual stuff. Anyway, is there still standalone version for the latest Octane, the one i am going to get access to? So i can just open the scene i saved in 4.05 and render in new one, literally plug and play, except now using the Ampere card (and RT)?
EDIT: Ok, tried again, payment failed again, reason: card declined. I realized now, its maybe because i tried to pay with my debit, rather than credit card. It usually works for everything else, apple, steam, etc... Anyway, wanted to purchase once again, with credit card now, it wont let me! It will just open a window saying Purchase - Subscription being processed. So am i supposed to wait 24 hours to find out what i already know - i suppose i know? I kinda want/need to work.
Meanwhile, if i go through the Subscriptions page of my account and click Extend maintenance for licenses - that seems to proceed. Can you confirm again, this is the same thing as renting that Studio subscription? At this point i am bit afraid to try to purchase third time, in case those 2 failed attempts already were not failures in the end, just still being processed.
EDIT: So i contacted support and problem solved. Installing 2020 now

Great
There are also a couple of plugins that have the same Standalone interface for editing the scene, like Sketchup, and probably also Unity and Unreal can do this.

Those are unfortunately not the plugins i am going to use, i got the 3DS max one. And the initial experience was not very good, somehow i "misplaced" the octane window, where it renders, whats in the viewport, in other words, i suppose it got minimized or something and i could not get to it visible back again. When i click the button Open, it said its already running. The whole app got fairly unresponsive as well, then, ultimately i had not to turn it off, but reboot entire computer, cause for example my hidden icons in the system tray on the bottom bar in windows went missing.
I will give it another try, no doubt though. I want to use instancing and whatnot in the future. BTW, is there a way to build a scene in modeling app, while using instanced geometry, then save it as that ORBX file and then open in Standalone?
Standalone works fine BTW, i got a crash twice though, while playing around with upsampling, which is a new feature to me - when turning it on. Otherwise, everything else worked as expected, bit disappointed with RTX speed-up in the particular scene i worked on yesterday, flat interior, only about 1,25x. Additionally, rendering speed in that scene with single 2080Ti in 4,05 was about 10Ms, in 2020.2 it shows 8Ms. Going to do some testing and compare actual rendering times and quality after certain threshold.
Finally, there is certain inconsistency in resulting quality of my renders, especially interior ones. I understand its all down to many factors, how well is the scene lit, usage of artificial light, geometry, materials...but still. I have pictures from scenes, which when i rendered, it took few minutes and they were crisp and almost flawless, just in like 1000Ms and 3 minutes of render time...then i have this new scene, which renders for like 45 minutes, on better hardware, on newer octane, and even after thousands of Ms the resulting image is crap, noisy and blotchy.

Now tell me what am i doing wrong.

Hi,
sorry, cannot help with 3ds Max, I work mostly in c4doctane and Standalone.
Please note that Standalone 2020.2 has a new and very powerful Scatter surface node: About rendering time difference, geometry emitters can have a a great impact on it.
Enabling AI Lights helps a lot, but please, have a look at what I have written here about this argument:

And here for the current Emitter node settings:
