Please I'm +100000 on this fix we should have round edges better for ages is like basics of the general 3d renders we had better result with the old mentalray haha,
Would be great to have this fix on Octane on the version we already have of OC3 for us will be a game change.

Please,Please and Please we need this extremely high priority!

can we get rounded edges as a global feature that will apply to to all stationary objects like buildings etc

No, that is not planned, since it requires more data and slows down geometry compilation as well as as rendering.

I haven't understood yet (I haven't in fact even thought about this before) what's the benefit of "rounded edges" feature in a render engine?

- Why you just don't model the edges as round as you want?

:?

Okay, for some text it could be a bit tedious to round all the edges manually, but.. it's perfectly doable..

Client gives you a CAD model they want rendered. 10000 unrounded edges.......

+1 on this

just had the need for it yesterday,
a cad model with no round edges, way too long to rebuild,
and the client asking why the render doesn't look as real and nice as it should...
And it's happening more and more often as some clients know that some
3D renders can do it, and ask why the other 3D guy can do it...and not you...
Anyway thanks for all the work done, i'm just complaining because i just
know it would change the life of many design product guys around here.

I don't know much about CAD, except LWCAD which is awesome and makes beautiful rounded edges with no effort.. I must ask,
why would client send you unrounded edges?

I sincerely would like to know what exactly is the problem, I have a hunch I may face this question eventually..

Ristoraven,

most of the time the CAD files i receive from manufacturers are early prototypes,
and 3d renders are meant to validate designs for the marketing/decision
makers or sometimes i work with designers who needs to sell their
designs to the same people with a quick turnaround.
They don't spend too much time on rounded edges etc... to get the 3D object done quickly
(sometimes it's just a file meant to be 3D printed by a model maker)
but they still want to see these rounded edges on the renders, and it hads a lot
of quality in the 3D visuels when you get these little spot of lights on the edges
(well you know that :)

cheers

Thanks. I still fail to see the problem.

For example, LWCAD is a NURBS modeler. Converting these NURBS to polygons and determining the level of details on the curves and edges, is very simple process.

I have studied briefly now this whole "CAD" field, and I found out it means "Computer Aided Design" (as opposed to pen and paper apparently). Seems that there's two worlds here. One is this "CAD" thing for product-, industry-, architecture- etc design and the other one is fantasy and fun stuff, like Hollywood and Octane. These two worlds cannot interact with each others. Seems to be impossible to make fun and cool renderings out from those serious designs.

Now, whose job it would be to make these two worlds to interact? Since this is geometry issue, I think it is not the render department who should be blamed.. ?
