Yeh, in Lightwave this is relatively easy as you just 'turn off' the object and use the alpha withe the shadow as a mask for whatever colour of layer you want. I need to go back and look at my work as I hadn't noticed the shadows always being black. I was fairly sure this was only in the darkest bits. Time to poke about
