as said this is not a licensing / anti piracy scheme which checks upon octane launch(as that's easily cracked).
think of it more as octane render becoming a world of warcraft client.

World of warcraft is a network game where being online is the whole crux of the program!!

That is in no way comparable to a rendering software unless it was related to distributed or network rendering which are things Octane doesn't do afaik as it needs to work with vram+gpu. Accessing the net to lock or unlock octane to a specific computer, or access a material library is a great feature and I really appreciate you introducing such features. But needing to have an internet connection to render is not an asset but a hindrance and can make Octane an unreliable renderer for some of us. :/

Anyway, got my fingers crossed. I really believe in Octane so I hope that this works out somehow...

And as i understand it:
you ONLY need to be online when you launch octane. so if you lose connection during rendering octane will NOT fail.
Right?

Although I'm online almost 24/7 I have to say I'm not excited by the news because I'm afraid some of us (licensed customers) may experience some problem with the new system, and accordingly to Murphy's law this will happen under strict deadline for sure...
that said I think we should just wait and see before start complaining/worrying about it, and remember to blame piracy and not the developers for these kind of troubles...

Radiance, Am I understanding right when you talked about a "floating license"... one license on two machines but only one at once can be used on web activation?

online resource sharing could be a nice add-on too if the community will be generous and willing to share assets

Here is my 2 cents. I bought the 2nd Octane license in hope of installing it on my work computer. Since I work for the government, we are on closed networks. The 2nd license I guess will be useless. And even with the home computer, sometimes ISP drop the connection for no reason. Things like trying to leave computer render overnight and had a hiccup on internet connection and wake up to see nothing got done is not a welcomed feature. Please consider marketing Octane better and open important features up so that big corps would start buying Octanes rather than try everything on anti-piracy. As we know, companies like Autodesk doesn't stay afloat with hobbiests but with huge corporations that buys thousands of licenses and renew them annually. If you can get even one of these big company to set Octane as standard, your company will stay alive for sure.
