A few questions

Is this an unbiased algorithm?
What is different about this than SSS?
Does this only work for emitters and sunlight?
Is this a material we apply to a mesh or is it a sort of environment the world sits in?
Can we control density with maps/textures?
Can the camera be inside the volume?
What are some limitations?

Yes

It is sss, just it can react to direct lighting.

What else should it work with?

It is material.

I like most of those answers :D

What I meant by working with emitters and sun only is that does it only take samples from light sources and not reflected light or bounces? Can I make a mirror and reflect light from the sun into the volume correctly?

Also, slightly off topic, but why does the camera being inside the volume pose a problem? Can't you "pretend" there is an infinitely small space exactly where the camera sits? Or truncate rays that are traveling through the volume? Not trying to sound know-it-all, just curious.
