Thanks for the response but I'm already doing this, it's helpful for basic object placement, but useless for lighting. A slight move of the octane light here, a small increase in intensity can result in huge changes to the match. The max viewport is kinda useless for this stuff.

What is the purpose of background image?
If you want just to combine render and background you can use alpha channel and Photoshop or similar soft.
For camera matching you can set background image in 3dsmax viewport.
