can you tell us more about the ilumination and camera response you used?
Sure,

The scene is lit by a HDRI and one area light.
The HDRI is one of an interior I thought would fit the scene.
I chose to put an extra area light in there to get more color contrast in the scene.
So I made it orange to simulate the color of a tungsten desk lamp.

I moved the HDRI so the main lighting comes from the right then I moved the orange light to the left.
Normally this gives a good looking lighting situation. I normally avoid to have a source of light from the same direction as the camera as it flattenes the image.

Hopefully this gives you a bit of an overview.

EDIT:

I just tweaked everything till it was looking good. I don´t know the intensities by heart ;-)
The HDRI had an gamma of 1 but I would have changed it if it would have benefited the picture.
I also didn´t use a camera curve on the render. It was rendered as linear EXR.

You have to understand that this although its made with a physically based renderer is not painting by numbers but a rather artistic process.
I know the rules (physics) and then I go by them and sometimes break them if it seems legit. What matters in the end is that the picture looks as you want it to look :-)

Cheers,
Raphael

very interesting setup

how much intensity you give to each light? hdri to fill and emitter to light, equal, or viceversa?

also the hdri..you use it with gamma 1.0?

last but not least, what camera response did you use?

thanks in advance!
