ok, it is magically working now for me again! i have no clue what that hiccup was about...but yeah, now mix material works and I am able to combine two mix materials! I guess i just couldn't combine two mix materials earlier because mix material in general was acting buggy. hooray! Thanks

what if I need a brushed metal metal with a high gloss varnish on it, for example? that would take two different layers of roughness but the materials don't seem to be setup to work like that.
is something like that possible?

My gut feel is if you want that you'd be best using geometry. Have your brushed metal, then have the garnish on top, but very close.

you can actually do that approach using a mix material, in a test i tried but it was really noisy. i did one metal and one glass combined in a mix material. although it worked, there were lots of fireflies. is there a way to make a material that is clear, but has no refraction? there's not reason i need to treat a layer of varnish like a refractive material with all the extra calculations when it's only a hair thin and i think that would fix the fireflies.

thanks, i'll check it out and see if that works. I did do a quick test setting the index to 0 but that took away all reflectivity, so I didn't even try anything else down that route.
