Pre23 v4 - not understanding lamp shade test

Can someone help me with this lamp shade topic?

I try to do the same thing as MaTtY631990 told but I can't find transmission controller in diffuse material. I am using 2.47 and 2.48 Octane Render.

The transmission parameter is hidden by default (I'm not sure why), so you'll have to use nodes:
