Hey, I'm doing the same types of things, decimating my models in ZB and rendering them. Like you've shown it's a hard chioce of either back rim lighting or front lighting that shows off the details... I'm thinking to combine them both... we may need to either do some photoshop magic with layers or create 2 light sorces on a hdr map.

You can do it with one HDRI and no photoshop :)
