IIRC, Roeland once mentioned the possibility to use a "sampling brush" to paint film areas that would need more sampling (like DOF). The renderer would then concentrate more power on those areas. Together with a "border rendering brush" this would be an awesome toolset that would speedup both; prototyping and rendering.

this is definitely necessery! A feature like this is really important to use octane in a production work. But render region or brush, how should work? In my opinion it should make me able to render just a region, and concentrate all power in that area, shooting for example 64000 sample, like a mask. Also on a finished render start a new shot of sample just to clear some areas. I belive arion/fry got this type of option.

That's the idea. The user would box-select a part of the film (like I tried to depict in my post) and Octane would render just that tiny part to the full samples extent. The rest of the film should be blacked out or not shown, to make it clear it's rendering just the selection.

Another related thing is the "sampling brush", that could be used to indicate which areas of the film Octane should focus more sampling on. Because now all the film gets the same amount of samples - that means that areas in focus will be clear much before DOF areas get clear, so any subsequent sampling of focused parts is practically a waste. Or for example, diffuse surfaces will clear much faster than glossy, etc.. A way to control sampling amount across the image could considerably help render speed.

If coding paint tools inside Octane is too much work it could be also done so: you do a test render to asses the noise quality (you don't need a lot of samples for that), then you save&load that test render in GIMP or Photoshop and paint a BW mask where 1.0 means max sampling and 0.0 some min amount higher than 0 (these two values we should be able to set inside Octane). Then you would load that mask in Octane, which would use it to control sampling amount across the film.
