Saw this the other day: https://www.lytro.com/camera#
I have no idea if this is possible, but if it was it might be a very nice new feature (new camera) in octane.
What do you think?
Different kind of camera

Why do You need that? =) i mean, when Lytro introduced this a lot of guys started talking around, photographers discused about various things..like:
Basicly letting user to choose focal point, explore the space you give out one thing..the possibility for photographer or artist to express his idea unaltered =)
the dof, angle, framing, pov ..- are the tools that give You as an artist a possibility to translate Your idea - some actually doesn't want it to be manipulated, some actually strive for perfection that the idea they want to express would be understood without a doubt as they intended.
There is a big difference between art and design (or presenting it). Art is or at least should be very subjective, while design should be objective. In simple terms..art should be interpretated and understood differently, while good design should Work as it was thought out.
so it depents..- some are doing presentations or photography as art, while other take more like design approach and those actually don't want tha at all.
pluss consider other fact..delivery format. It's one more headache..
& Last but not least..Octane actually can do now what You want right now =) just hook up very powerfull beast with 8gpus take an autofocus picker and play around =) Almost in realtime..

Hi glimpse,
you´re probably right. Ithink it was the idea of changing something that usually is unchangeable what fascinated me about this new technique.
You could easily make two different pictures out of one, just by changing the focus. But boosting my my hardware could be a way too. In fact it would be more expensive
.

Well i have to say that first time i've seen this i was Excited too.
But just think about it: if You want to post something like this on the web for end user to explore, he would actually have to download some plugin to view it..- i mean technicalyy thats one more thing between You and the viewer..
In these days when information should be modular on the web, as responsive design with fluid layouts kick in..You should be able to view content on pc, on telephone, on tablets on other devices too..
Any new delivery format should be introduced and be accepted by industry..Lytro or Octane is just too small to make those changes..they are not apple or google to push standats in the web.
Though having this function in the render engine while You work might be fun, but as I said, now You can do that just now with some more power in You rig =)
But actually something like multi-light that maxwell render has would be actualy even more useful..as You could blend different lighting passes - for archtects, designers this would save a lot of time.
