The difference is that Blender is open source and therefore has a lot more daily builds. Octane is commercial and therefore lives and dies on the quality of the releases. Therefore releases are much more controlled and, hopefully, tested before they reach the light of day. If an SVN of blender doesn't work then you simply go back and grab another if a release of Octane fails then it will be all over the forum and people will lose confidence in the product.

I agree that progress on cycles appears to be so much quicker than Octane which is even more amazing when, as far as I know, only one person is writing cycles where as Otoy have a team (maybe quite small) or programmers.

I work for a software house so I know all about the work that goes on in the background that the public never sees. We have a team of 30+ programmers but it still feels as if progress is painfully slow at times. I am sure our customers have the same frustrations that you have.

VRay RT came out with an update in May and it is pretty much just as fast as Octane now for PMC and pathtracing and it fully supports DR. This means I can send a single image out to be rendered across an unlimited number of GPU servers. Why would I ever want to use Octane? Well Octane still has a speed advantage and the quality is more photorealistic.

Come on Refractive, please follow through on what you have stated you would do. Has Autodesk and Otoy taken over and shelved Octane so that it would not compete with them? I sure hope not but that is what I feel might have happened. Certainly would not be the first time Autodesk has shelved technology to avoid it being competitive with one of their core products.
Hi, I'm a vray(rt) user and after several tests I can say that one vray render made with gpus is identical to the one rendered with cpus.
The render generated by Octane is superior because use spectral technology. PMC is superior to the PT kernel. Impossible to render a scene with low light conditions with: iray, vray-rt and arion.
I'm just rendering now, with Octane for Max, a 3d scene with more than 20.000 ies photometrics (real leds). Impossible to do it with the softwares I mentioned before.
The feedback with Octane is extraordinary, it's really fast, impossible to achieve these performance with the other softwares.
When instances and rt 3d transformation will be available Octane will become the best render engine in the world.
I trust in Refractive/Otoy.

If only Brecht stayed with RS...

Cycles development is in fact much faster than Octane, it's not just a feeling because it's opensource and therefore has more frequent builds. The first official Cycles build came about the same time we got SSS in Octane (nov / dec 2011) - which was the last big improvement we got in Octane, all subsequent builds were just bugfixes and minor stuff (useful stuff, but still minor). Now look what Cycles got in the meantime. (I seriously doubt only Brecht is working on it)

Refractive software had some steady development periods, but also at least the same amount of confusing periods with low productivity (people coming & going ==> need to re-train new programmers, whole Belgium office closed at some point, lead programmer takes a break...). Hope that the whip will start cracking now with the new management... :D

But Cycles has a different target in mind than Octane, so I hope that there will still be a future for Octane&Blender, cause I wold like to use both.

you have to realize that right now they are not adding stuff on to what they already have, they are rewriting a significant portion of the program so that it can do instancing and real time transformations, this wasn't possible because Octane didn't see objects, just materials.
Not to mention the move to Otoy must have slowed things down during the transition.
Cycles has a fast development speed because they have a fully working program already and are building on top of that. I bet once we have Instancing, we will see a steady stream of features coming in to Octane.

only vray-rt works in distribute render, it's a custom implementation.
Cuda 5.0 will enable full functional distribute render and RS/Otoy will implement it. Without it Otoy can't sell its service.

BTW you can launch two renders of the same scene on two different machines. Then you can mix in photoshop the two images.
I did a test and it works.

I will say this community is probably the most patient and understanding group of people Ive seen, thats not necessarily a good thing but just something Ive observed. Personally, the lack of information and updates from RS is pretty annoying considering this is something I spent good money on. Ive been involved in testing of a lot of early stage dev processes and RS leaves me in the dark far more than any other.
