I have a GTX 580 3GB and I'm looking to buy either another 580 or a 690 and put up with the slow running until CUDA 5.0 kicks in...However I would like to know If I got another graphics card with lets say 2GB Ram will octane share the memory between both? Giving me 5GB of memory to work with...This might be an extremely stupid question by the way...
No, the scene is copied to each cards memory for the GPU to work on. The available ram for octane is the least of the cards used so that it is able to fit on all cards. GPU's can't access each others memory and using main memory is too slow.
If you allocate a 3GB and a 2GB card for rendering then your scene size limit will be 2GB.
