How to turn off material? Make it invisible? Opacity = 0?

I cant' seem to do this??

Have tried setting an Opacity value of 0 and Turning off the material but those don't do anything??
Win 7 64 | 3 x GTX 580 | i7 950 | 24GB

ok opacity = 0 does work... didn't see the effect because it was obscured by another material which had a transparency map set incorrectly, so this is no problem
