This what I get using an optimized 3d grass geometry and instancing it with Itoo Forest Pack.

Obviously we haven't real instances yet but our renderings will look like this.

I filled all my vram (3GB)

The grass carpet is larger than we see in the render.

Without any problem I was able to navigate this scene with more than 10 millions polygons, faster than Nitrous driver but with light, reflections, refractions, caustics, bump, etc.

Imagine what you can do with real instances....

Marvelous Octane.

Nice!

I would increase the roughness of the reflection. It is too shiny...

Marvelous Octane.
Instances will allow you to produce more grass, but speed will slow down.

looks great!

So instancing is only about duplicating geometry? What else would that be useful for other than grass? a row of houses maybe? hmm... I wondering why everyone is so excited about instancing??

What was your light setup? And where can I find a tutorial on how to setup lighting like this. Looks real!

Blender Cycles can do instancing in gpu and it opens up the possibility of having billions of polygons in a scene (if I understand it right).

I like octane a lot more than cycles as it is so much faster and easy to use for rendering though instancing is pretty awesome for landscapes.
