Im having a great deal of trouble navigating the viewport, it seems completely unintuitive to me. Does anyone have some ideas as to why i might be having difficulty rotating a camera precisely, its rotates as if the centre of rotation is somewhere unexpected and resetting the up-vector doesnt seem to help....

You can change the center of rotation with the camera target picking tool. It's on the render viewport toolbar.

Will the 3dconnexion 3d mouses be supported in the future? They are awesome to work with..

They are supported. You should plug in your 3D mouse before starting Octane. If you plug in the mouse after starting, then lock and unlock the viewport. Octane should then recognise the mouse.
