is there a way to tell octane to use only 90% of the gpu. It would be nice because I only have one gpu and when rendering i can't watch any youtube which sucks. I am looking for a way to do this either in octane or with anther program.

also i have an i-7 with an Intel 3000 hd.
I know its not good but that would be fine for YouTube. is there a way to use the on board gpu from the cpu and my gtx 580?

No and no. Throttling the GPU would be nice but it's not available yet.

Your intel graphics card is: 1) Useless and 2) Not CUDA enabled.

the intel one would be fine for watching youtube while the gtx 580 does the rendering.

I think the way to do that would be to enable your onboard video card as your primary device (plug your monitor into it) and in octane, select the Nvidia card as your renderer. I've never done it, but I think that might work.

I got this working on a laptop with an NVIDIA GPU and an intel HD3000.

If you are using a laptop with NVIDIA Optimus make sure optimus uses the integrated Intel GPU for your browser.

To work with octane Optimus must also use the integrated Intel GPU for displaying octane.
