Got you. Basically the hd info is missing then? Or at least just for the Sun? That's weird. But it makes sense considering what's happening to the mesh. This means I will have to check any hdri to make sure its really hdr.
And thanks for the explanation on the "default" material issue. That makes sense too, if Octane can only offer pins for what it finds in the obj. Now that I think about it, I think what threw me was that Maxwell automatically creates a default material even before any meshes are loaded. So I made a wrong connection there.
