Hi all,

As you might know, beta2 will also support the Mac OS X operating system natively.

Although the current control scheme works fine with a PC 3 button mouse,
we need to take into account mac users with mac mice. (eg 1 button and CMD + button for right click)

Since i need to make some changes to the current control scheme, i might aswell make some changes where needed.
We need to find a good scheme for everyone (eg windows, mac and linux)

The current scheme is:

viewport camera

left mouse = select or rotate camera on drag
middle mouse = zoom
right mouse = pan/move camera

mousewheel = zoom

holding shift makes all these actions 10x as fast

viewport rendered image

holding CTRL and left mouse drag = pan/move the image viewport
holding CTRL and right mouse drag = zoom the image viewport (although was'nt working correctly, it will be fixed in beta2)

on linux the CTRL key does'nt seem to work.

I'm interested in hearing about what users think and what they would like, a scheme that's the most user friendly, and is compatible/useable with all OS'es.
Please, only suggest changes to keys/mouse buttons, not additional functionality as i need to wrap up beta2.

Thanks,
Radiance

that's all very good, but there are still lots of mac users with a single button mouse.

I would not change anything for the mac. I have been a mac user since '89 and when I started doing 3d work about 10 years ago I knew that I would have to get a 3 button mouse as part of that. As a matter of fact, all the 3d programs that I have tried or bought have said right away that a 3 button mouse would be required to use the program. Just my thoughts.

viewport camera

ALT+left mouse = rotate camera on drag
left mouse = select but don't change anything ( doesn't re-render the screen - example during render you can pick object and see its material, properties etc.)
ALT+middle mouse = zoom
ALT+right mouse = pan/move camera

ALT + mousewheel = zoom

holding shift makes all these actions 10x as fast

Sorry for red colors, it was more for showing my ideas, I had enough accidental scrolls and button presses and re-render the scene form scratch after 1 hour and more render time.

that's very nice, but if we do that i will be bombarded with support posts of users asking how to use octane on a mac.
just wait and see ;)

Seriously ? You have that old mouse without the funny ball as the scroll ?
I never seen any of the one button mouse for 1-2 years

All people working on media on mac has a 3 button mouse
Just think about using Photoshop, Final cut with it

My tought is = don't change the controls + allow to customize controls (key remapping)
Problem solved...

i said in my post = that i don't want to add more functionality to delay the beta2 release.
so no key remappings.

anyways,
i should'nt have posted this question, it's ending up in the usual everyone gives his opinion, no solutions.

if anyone else has a preference for new key bindings, please post them

andrian's idea is good, what do the others think about it ?

I have no problems with the ALT + click
But only because the single left click is a new function
