Is it possible to import separate OBJ meshes and build the scene in Octane, or can it only import existing scenes built in some other app?
I am starting to play with the demo, and it did not look like there was any way (no nodes) to get two or more meshes to be visible in the same render.

No, you can't. You need to export your scene as one OBJ file.

Got you.

Are there any plans to in the future with the stand-alone program? The reason I am asking is that since Octane is a real-time renderer, and since materials, lighting and other things can be adjusted in real-time, it only makes sense to be able to adjust object positions in real-time as well, to take maximum advantage of how shadows, reflections and refractions interact with each object. I just know there will be times when I will have wished that an object were placed in a slightly different position, and having to go back to the original scene in some other program to move the object will mean not being able to check how it looks in the final render in real-time. So much trial and error time will be wasted bouncing back and forth between Octane and the other program.

one way past that are the fully integrated plugins, which are already out or in the works (max, autocad, maya, xsi and daz studio).

the next step in that area should be the instancing update which is on the horizon. it will allow to have multiple independent mesh nodes in a scene, and afaik also to apply transformations to them.

btw. plugins and standalone share the same engine, thus such (new) features will be available through all of them...
The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply

That would be sweet when that comes out, since I do not have any of the programs that can utilize the plugins right now. My only option is to export out of Maxwell, but due to NL's ridiculous "feature" to protect meshes, their Studio version of the program "protects" the meshes so that they cannot be exported out as obj. Go figure. They like to use the term, "default" to indicate that this is the default setting when using the program, as if there was some way to turn it off!

And I have never seen a Maxwell MXI to OBJ converter out there, I don't think MR is popular enough for someone to write the converter (at least for basic things like object positions, cameras, lights, and basic texturing like bitmap placements and projectors). Since MR uses their own materials scheme, I would be fine if just the basic information ported over.
