Yes, so dissapointing the slow progression in Octane Render, I remember some months ago when Blender Cycles started and was a big hit in this forum, at that time Cycles missed many features, some months later the progression in cycles is HUGE, many features in a short amount of time with an small and unpaid team. Now Refractive software shows a little progress time to time, and no new big features at all, if this situation continues I can imagine that Cycles and other engines are going to step on top of Octane very very soon.

I'm a video game developer, I use Octane almost every day in my workflow, and more than a 58 release, I'm looking forward for the 2.6 series. First of all I need ASAP that they fix the bug when you import multiple nodes and all the connections are lost... Second, I want to be able to move the objects into the scene... :(
It seems they are focusing on the 3DSMax plugin recently, which is a bit disappointing for me because I'm a Maya user... I hope to see some update soon... :|

Sad to say but I am starting to think that I should be looking at cycles rather than Octane. Cycles seems to be progressing so much faster. At the moment I have ignored cycles because of Octane. Octane is pretty static at the moment and the people at RS are giving the impression that they don't really care. I rather suspect that with all the stories about OTOY floating around that they have simply stopped coding until the new team take over.

They can't talk about anything, because they are under new contracts with the new owners. That would explain the abrupt and absolute silence that is going on in the last months.

With the disclosure that RS has been bought by a firm linked to Autodesk, it becomes clear that Blender users will have no long-term future with Octane. When RS was independent the userbase had some ability to influence development, ask for dearly needed features and improvements. Now the bigwigs will call the shots and prioritize the development.

Very disappointing. I had great hopes for Octane. Luckily theres Cycles with fast development progress, which in a few months will have all and more features than Octane standalone has now. Maybe not the same render speed, but I care more about flexibility than speed.

Unless RS comes out with a clear roadmap, future development schedule / plans, from which it will be evident that the standalone version will survive and have the needed support in the future, Blender users should better focus their learning and beta-testing time on Cycles.

Cycles has very different targets, it is planed as not physical correct renderer.
No plans for portals, IES, backbody, refraction or a real sun system and more:
Not Priorities

There are some things obviously missing that people would like to see added. Bidirectional path tracing, photon mapping, MLT and similar algorithm are not a priority for me, since we do not believe they are the main possible performance improvements for animation frames. Shading language support, resumable rendering, is another one that we do not think should get very high priority.
The plan is a semi realistic renderer for fast animation rendering.
I have payed for a Octane license until < 2.0 for only 99.00 € and it was worth every cent until now.
I have no crystal ball to see the future development but it is maybe not as good for blender as for other 3d software.

Refractive Software has a bad PR, what we like to see is a roadmap like this:
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:2 ... es/Roadmap

Cheers, mib.

I guess that I'd may as well start looking at those cycles tutorials that I have been avoiding. For me it is either cycles or Octane. with a future that is less than rosy for Blender users I think the answer is going to have to be cycles.

I can version 2 of Octane coming out very soon. That way they can concentrate on the users that they want and drop those that they don't.
