Please forgive the question if it has already been addressed (I searched but didn't find it):

If I don't have VRay, am I able to convert VRay materials for use with Octane?
It seems like there are lot of great VRay materials available and it would be a big productivity boost to be able to use them.
I imagine that since Octane already has the conversion capability it wouldn't be too difficult to make it work on VRay materials even if VRay isn't installed. . .

Related to this, is there a way to access and use the LiveDB materials in Max or can I only use them with the standalone Octane application?

Thank you.

Hello there.

You need vray in order to view the materials in 3ds max through the material slot.
I suppose vray demo will do the trick and read them out.

On the time that Vray trial gives you just convert as much as possible materials you can!!!!

Beware material conversion gives problems and wont convert everything correctly.

Livedb materials in Max is supposed to be in one of the next releases of the plugin.

Thank you GDRS! The Vray demo will be a handy temporary workaround.

It would be nice if Refractive encapsulated their conversion code to work externally to Max so that one can batch convert VRay materials without having a VRay license.
There could also be an option to convert the materials so that they can work with the standalone version of Octane.

Barring that, perhaps they will convert a boatload of Vray materials and load them into the liveDB. . .

No problem at all my friend.

By the way the external conversion solution is a great idea but i dont think that this is possible because in order to convert the material first it must read them and in order to read them it will need the Vray coding.

The second idea of your its more doable.

Refractive team could convert basic vray materials from all the basic categories and tweak them in order to fully play with OCR.
