The GTX 5xx series already had 3GB Vram models while 1-2GB standard was the standard. Now 3GB is already standard for the 7970 cards from AMD. You can be assured that we will see 4GB cards in the gaming sector, atleast from AMD and I'm sure Nvidia will do the same.
Multi displays are getting very popular and games need a lot more VRAM than 2 years ago. Many games run way better with 2GB vram duo to their extreme texture size and amount.
AMD and Nvidia always build their cards a little ahead of time, when 512MB was the standard for games, all modern cards already had 1GB Vram and we also saw the first 2GB cards.
So I wouldn't be so pessimistic about the VRAM size :)
