What does scaling down mean, simply reducing the size e.g. in Gimp? I tried this on a noisy render but it doesn't make any difference... What's the trick here? :?

correct

if you want to render a picture 1200x768 then render 3600x2304 with, say, 1000-1500 samples and then scale it down to 1200x768 in gimp. You'll see the noise clears off and the image is much much sharper
