Hi all

Anybody who can give me some advice on connecting cables for graphics card?

I'd like to upgrade to GTX 560 (most powerful card I can handle in my current computer) but it needs 2 x 6-pin connectors for power and I only have one (my current graphics card is using it now but I will use that one for the new card). However, there is another 6-pin connector attached to the one which is currently in use (see yellow/black cables between 6-pin connectors in photo). A potentially stupid question follows: Can I use that one as the second 6-pin connector?

If not... Together with the new graphics card comes a cable which makes one 6-pin connector out of 2 x 3-pin connectors. I have one white 4-pin connector available. Also one black 2-pin connector.

What do you suggest or am I screwed? :?

the 2nd 6pin connector is made exactly for that. it depends on the gpu and the power supply if a single lane is powerful enough to drive the card under load, but you will of course find this out. if not, the only thing that may happen is, that octane starts "failing" after some time in the rendering process. how powerful is your current psu?
The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply

2x i7 2600K @4.5 (P8Z68 -V P), 12GB, 1x EVGA GTX 580 3GB @0900/2200/4400

Hey, thanks for the quick reply, t_3. :)

My psu says max wattage 450W, and peak 500W. I have understood that this is enough for GTX 560, but GTX 560 Ti already needs 500W minimum. What do you think?

i currently drive a gtx 590 with a good quality 550w psu. as there are myriads of different power supplys, you will have to find out if the config runs stable or not, but in general i'd say it could work...

Wow, I would sure like to get a more powerful one than GTX 560 but I don't think I dare to take the risk. I think I'll buy one soon. My current graphics card has started making a weird noise a few minutes every time I start the computer, probably because of using it for rendering (?). I don't think that a less than 2 years old card would otherwise do that...

hm, is it definitely the graphics card making the noise? could be the psu also. usually this is are coils starting to oscillate under load. but whatever card you get, you should prepare yourself to also change the psu - might be necessary...

I checked again and the noise definitely seems to come from the graphics card fan (?) rather than the psu. If it's the fan... there are three other fans, including the psu fan, which make a very small sound when running. I have cleaned the cpu fan earlier, and the gpu fan looks clean too. The noise is not very bad or loud but clearly higher sharper noise than the computer used to make when started. It has been there a few months by now. Sometimes it lasts even a few minutes. Sometimes just 30 seconds or so. The normal sound of the computer is always louder for 10 seconds or so when started (I think it's the fans) but the extra noise I'm talking about is different and lasts longer. One thing is that it's NOT getting worse. Once it appeared it has been the same. So I'm not freaked out but a bit worried. :? One more thing, the same sound appears when the computer recovers from stand-by state (or whatever it's called in English).

If you can hang on a bit, Keplar cards should be due out in April.Their supposed to be around 25% more efficient than the current cards. (well thats the rumor circulating at the moment) ;)

Thanks for the tip. That would be awesome. Can you post a link or something? :)

Too many fakes about Kepler.
There are officially no statements about specifications.
They should come in the first quarter, but which, low range, mid or high, isn´t confirmed.
Also, surprise, surprise...
