The finished low-poly captain character:

in my opinion it looks super great, only the mantle would need of a bit of sss... how many polys?

This last version is cca 12,900 triangles. The problem with SSS is that it would need another texture to define it, but the model already uses a total limit of 2k x 2k texture data space available. To fit another texture, I would need to re-scale the others down and they are quite low-res for my taste already.
