I agree with Pixelrush.
3GB of VRAM is a comfortable amount, and allows very interesting scenes.
I have two GTX 280 3GB, and I used them to render the images that can be seen on the page below.
I really hope that instances will come soon !
Currently, the project is in standby while waiting for instances and a better animation system, but without instances I have been able to render from 12500 trees with some very detailed in the center of the scene, up to 50000 trees seen frm distance.
Also, Blender fails at making real complex objects from two many particles, so the limit of 50000 trees is in part due to Blender related troubles.

Thanks! For my own, I have never overclocked a machine or a device. I don't think it is a good thing . It can reduce the life time of the components. I prefer stability. The computing power available with the original settings is already huge with cards like GTX 580.
