okay guys what i want to do is to make my first material
i want to make an explosion material
so what im looking at doing is 4 different colors
yellow that emits light
orange that emits light
a scattered gray
and then a scattered brown
my ideal way to make this material is to apply the colors in layers
yellow, then orange, then gray, then brown
that way the core of the explosion shape will be yellow fading to orange peaking through gray and brown
so if you were to take a cone and apply the material you would see the pattern
any ideas?

I suggest to have a look at existing materials, there are a few good ones in liveDB, and try to understand how they work. You can also have a look at the tutorials and sharing section in our forum.

And to model an explosion you may need to use a few meshes with different materials, rather than just a cone. If you do it with one material you may start looking at how gradient nodes and image textures work.
