i've made a comparison with the same ies file on octane, c4d and maxwell. For c4d and maxwell the ies file is attached to a normal spot light. For octane there are three blackbody emitters, the sphere on the right has 2592 polys, the one on the left has 384 polys and in the center only one poly emitter. The single poly emitter seems more in focus but extremly blurry compared to c4d and m~r

It should depend on size of the emitter. Spotlight has 0 size, right? So it's the sharpest.

good point, it's a dimension problem, reducing 10 times gives sharp light. the mistake comes from the fact that in my experience emitters smaller than 20 cm ~ gives problems in conjunction with big ones. so i must cut them in small pieces.
the good news is that one poly is quite enough for spotlight
