Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has encountered this before.

I bought a new GTX 470 to go with my current GTX 470, after installing though it is showing up as a lower spec GTX 465 (less onboard memory etc). The weird thing though is that rather than having 352 cuda cores as the 465 should it's showing 448 cores like the GTX 470.

So I'm not really sure what's going on with it. Do you think someone has owned the card before and flashed the firmware/drivers to unlock the extra cores? Could it be a factory mistake?

The card came all packaged up as a GTX 470 and the stickers on the card say it's a 470 so I'm a bit stumped really. The make is a ASUS ENGTX470

Any help/advice would be grateful, thanks in advance.
Chris.

That is very strange. You do have another working 470 there which means all your drivers are in order. Maybe check with the retailer and better yet, have it exchanged. Hopefully the warranty is still in effect.

... seems that this (sort of) has happened to a few others too: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=190066
and as there are some ways to unlock a 465 to a 470 it also seems, that someone has already messed around with it - i'd defenitely return the card!
The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply

y'welcome ;) btw: i love your avatar - even if it always makes me think you're just fighting a problem (well...)

& a last ps: if you have to mount the two cards side by side (within 4 slots), you should take care about the heatsink; in general the factory one is better suited for that kind of mounting; because if the fans are on the side of the card, like some custom designs have it, it'll may lead to heat problems, as - if it is the card in 2nd position - they'll directly carry the backside heat from the 1st card onto the heatsink (hope you can understand what i tried to describe); even one slot apart those designs heat up a 2nd card by a notable amount of degrees...

Ha ha! Thanks. That avatar was a bit of work I did years ago, an army general that I never finished.

I think I know what you mean about mounting the cards. I thought they were a bit close when I installed the gtx 465 next to the 470. My current 470 is a Palit and has 2 fans underneath and the ASUS one that I'm sending back had a fan on the top. Don't know how that would have worked out with them generating a lot of heat. I think my motherboard has a 3rd slot for graphics cards so I might be able to use that one and spread them apart more.

Looking at the specs of your machines I reckon you know what you are talking about. :)

if the slot is free and has enough space, i'd definitley do that. if you still get high temps, an additional fan blowing inbetween the cards would also help. as all my rigs have a vertical orientation (http://p.gzhls.at/1036/681036/681036-6.jpg http://p.gzhls.at/8165/668165/668165-3.jpg) it is a lot easier for the heat to dissipate; on a standard case layout it's always a bit testing and messing around - at least if you try to keep the cards under ~75-80 degrees...

Yeah thinking about it space might still be a bit tight. I've got a Cosmos Cooler Master, the power supply at the bottom is quite close to the spare slot.
