questions for print/dpi outputs

Hello there,
this is my first post, so I must say how amazing I was when I saw the power of the program at the video section. AMAZING!
I´m a Modo user, and I in most of the times, my output renders, must be for print. Yes, I did search the forum before, and I found something like the current output size is 4906. Is this right?
If so, I have a few questions here, and I will be very thankful for the answears :)

1- I guess the output size is limited because of the vga´s memory amount, not the geometry but the textures. But, will Octane support hi-resolution (print) rendering output? Like 10k pixels at 300dpi? If yes, there is a estimated date for it?

2- the current version allows to save the image at 300dpi? or there is no control for it?

3- Sorry but that one is "duh": what is MTL? I read it a lot here :(

4- Another "duh" question: I wish to understand more about what exactly is "Unbiased". As far as I can get, is some kind of "trick" or "way' to render things faster, am I right? :oops:

Hi and welcome,
2- so far you can only set the resolution per pixel, and yes 4k by 4k currently is the maximum.
3- with mtl im sure you refer to the obj material definition, which is saved with an obj file, if you need to store texture infos or similiar.
4- un-biased means that the renderer "expects" no final result, so it will refine the image infinitely, based on its algorithm, however as time passes by, the quality will reach a level where you hardly notice any difference anymore.
Modo itself has a biased renderer for when the 100% is reached, youre simply done :)

And despite being un-biased, its also based on the physical behavior of light an materials, not an approximation on the light model as with most rendering solutions.

I think I[ll fo for it.
But about the dpi? Can it be set to 300 at the save final image? Or the output will be at 72dpi (screen resolution)?

I'm still new to Octane myself, however as far as i can see the "save image" is more temporarily, as the team is working with a lot of effort to fullfill all the milestones. So far you are only able to save a png file with the default screen resolution (there is actually no dpi info so far), which is of course rather rudimentary. I'm very sure they will implement a more elegant solution to save with different dpi settings or formats like layered .exr or .hdr... :mrgreen:

unless you mean MLT, which stands for Metropolis Light Transport, which I believe is just a different algorithm for calculating the paths of light.. (faster and looks cleaner)

Octane renders pixels so setting DPI doesn't make sense in that context. DPI means dots(pixels) per inch, so DPI is concerned with physical dimensions, pixels are "absolute". Say you want to print a square picture 10 inches wide, at 300DPI - so you need 10x300=3000 dots(pixels). You'd set Octane to render at 3000x3000 (or larger and crop). If you wanted to print 5 inches at 600DPI, you'd still have Octane render 3000x3000, see?
