I stopped the render after 3 hours.

GTX 470 or GTX 480 should be good enough. They have got great price and performance. GTX 580 is better in terms of RAM amount but much more expensive.

The hairs are just a mesh with texture and alpha.
I intensified a little the specularity with Photoshop.
