Very interesting. I wonder if using the image stacks feature of Photoshop you could get better results.

Just tested the two applicable stack modes, Mean and Median, with the '40 x 125 samples' set. Mean is actually mathematically same as the method I used earlier and Median is, well, median. The result in this case is almost identical, median is slightly coarser but mostly the noise just shifts a little. Median might fare better in cases where there are larger value deviations, like fireflies.
