Dispersion is when the light is broken up by the material so that you can see all of the lights colors, think of the rainbow and how you can see the colors in it......bad explanation, but thats why we have wikipedia:-) http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dispersion_(optics)
Why does not the link work? it removes the last ")" so to make the link work you have to ad that to the address bar your self?
I was thinking maybe dispersion and caustics are related in a physically based renderer since both things are caused by refraction of light. Often times caustics show some dispersion. But I'm way out of my league here.
while waiting for dispersion and IOR I played with stereo, hope you are able to enjoy it, because I had to change the colors to red / blue for my glasses...
