Do you use photoshop?

Filter > Other > Hi Pass, and set the pixel radius to 2-5, depending on resolution and desired detail.
Now use the levels to boost the contrast a little bit.
done.
That´s how I create my bump maps.

you can also desaturate it and then use nvidia's free normal map generator plugin for photoshop http://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-text ... -photoshop, normal's map usually look better than bump maps
