Hi,

I know some of you guys use MoI. Can you please look at the following simple model I made in MoI and suggest a good combination of export/import settings that won't produce odd rendering issues (see screenshot attached)? I'm fairly inexperienced in all this (both modeling and rendering) and I feel like I'm just missing some obvious information on how to avoid this kind of problems, or how to analyze what's happening and why.

Thanks!

have you checked the scale?
do you export in meters?
also make sure all your exported faces are triangles, not n-gons,
there should be an option to disable it.
also check the manual i think there's a screenshot of the MOI3d export config in there.

Im a MoI user myself (seriously a good software ;) )
You need to export in Triangles only, no quads, no ngons.
Also try to set your units in MoI as meters, so you don't need to change anything in Octane

By looking at your screenshot I see a scale problem + that you used quads + tris

edit: stop being so fast Terrence

I'm exporting in meters yes. The object is about 20x40 meters big in MoI. Is that too big? Too small? What's a good scale?

should be good, but check the triangles export option as sam said...

Okay, after playing with various scales and exporting as triangles only, I seem to have a clean render now. Thanks!

Hi,

Excellent software, thanks a lot for making this happen!

I also experience some problems exporting from MOI.
Sharp edged corners very often shows black triangulations.

I have tried exporting in other 3d apps and apply smooth groups with angle limits but it doesnt appear to translante in octane.

As a workaround I dice up the model very small and turn off smoothing altogether, but that's not very convenient...

Thanks,

Marc

Can you post an example file here (the MOI3D file)? I'll have a look.

Hi,

smooth groups are imported per material currently,
so you would have to split your model per material per smooth group.

black triangles on smoothed polygons is normal smoothing on too large angles.

either use a edgesplit like modified if your app supports it or split you're model into multiple materials per smoothgroup prior to export.
