Hi,

I recently bought octane, so i'm a complete newbie with this rendering software.


In some 3D modeling, such as an architecture 3D imported from sketchup,

I found that it was difficult to approach and make a close look on certain details of materials

and also impossible to get into the building.


I found that the only possible way to get a closer look is to change the parameter of fov in Mesh preview camera.

Am i doing something wrong?

Even in the octane benchmark demo scene, it was unable to get closer on the other side of the wall. I feel like
10 meters away from the end but it won't zoom and approach more than that.

But strangely, in the Hallway demo scene, i could get in and out freely.

Can someone help me with this problem?

This is usually related to importing the model at the wrong scale.
Make sure you export in meters for unit size,
Or, change the import unit type in the obj preferences panel.

Further to add to radiances comment.Also try picking a zoom point with the camera zoom picker tool on the toolbar and then try zooming into that point.

The workflow would be zoom picker point > zoom in> spin camera around>zoom picker point> zoom into another point....ETC...ETC.... to walk your camera around various points in a scene.

Radiance, i've learned that before(last week) and i was very cautious about what you said.

The model unit(default drawing template on sketchup) was changed in meters and also reduced them(cause i usually work on mm unit) and export-import in meters also.

In fact, it helped and improved a little, but didn't solved entirely my problem.


Jaberwocky, I'll try out your recommendation this afternoon, but i'm afraid that it will not also solve all my problems here, cause i'm afraid that it will be difficult to pick a material which is found inside the building, hidden and covered by an exterior wall(or even an opposite side of a transparent element such as a window)

Thx a lot for your suggestions and for your quick replies, i'll try out again and again.

Sorry probably didn't explain myself properly.You use the zoom picker tool next to the materials picker tool.If you are outside a room and want to go inside , just pick a point close to the outside wall.zoom to that point then zoom in through the wall and once inside pick a camera zoom point in the centre of the floor of the room so that the camera will swivel around that point.You can then go and explore the inside of that room at will and use the material picker once inside the room.

This might need a you tube demo to explain it better . :o
