I forgot to mention that I also rotated the step cuts stones randomly through their z axes ever so slightly, since when setting, they frequently are slightly skewed, as the setter will not be able to cut a perfect channel by hand.

Detail counts more than lighting. I say that mainly because I am useless at lighting, but it is nonetheless almost true.

Also note that the channels are "cut" to fit the stones, so they are not perfectly smooth either. That would be a dead giveaway.

Is it possible with this release to get caustics like in the link. I test rendered a scene with light beaming down on to a cd near a wall reflective side up with a angle map applied. I get the shape of the cd and the colours reflected on to a wall but it does not seem to capture those triangular like caustic patterns.

This one shows less diamond, and presumably a gazillion fewer refractions, hence the considerable speedup - 2 hours 26 minutes for 5345 samples.

Hello ! I have got very good news ! You may remember my troubles with Cuda 3.2 Octane versions : My external GTX graphic cards were not seen by Octane in my Cubix box.

Recently, I gathered enough savings to order two EVGA GTX 580 wit 3GB of VRAM. I received them today and installed them few hours ago. As my current only working Nvidia driver (old 258.96) doesn't support the GTX 580 I installed (with much fear !) the last 275.33 driver.

Very good surprise : All 1.0246b and 1.0247 Octane versions with Cuda 3.0, 3.2, and 4.0 open fine and see all my graphic cards, including the external cards in the Cubix, allowing me to use 3GB of VRAM !

I have also installed the last ersion of EVGA Precision monitoring software, but I have not yet had time to control the cards temperature. As thee is actually bad weather here, with lightnings, I have unplugged the workstation and will make more tests later.

well, so much testing got me thirsty... so a nice soda (my favourite one) would help.
Hope you like it, caustics are fantastic, I've done some more renders till I got the modeling right (this is not my usual line of work, so I'm not used to this type of modeling, but I have lot's of fun with it) and the texturing (that foam was driving me crazy) but Octane as always did the magic. I'll post later on the wip forum previous tests with more samples but worse modeling and texturing.
Setup, hdri for ambiance, simple spotlight, PMC 3760 for 3 hours and 50 minutes in my gtx 470, hotpixel at 0,27 (I have some test at 6k and 8k samples and they do not need hotpixel removal). Also as soon as I get a new ups I'll do some more renders (with the current one I cant put both GPUs to work)
@ Elvissuperstar007 64K samples are a lot of samples! render looks good, but in that scene it might be faster PT, have you tried it?
@ roubal congrats, now you'll be able to finish your stranded-on-the-desert movie with those beast running!

Thanks Kubo. This test removes a big weight from my shoulders, because I had the big fear of not being able to run future versions of octane because of my Cubix not seen with previous Cuda 3.2 drivers. Now I can breath ! :)

Note : As I changed the cards before changing the driver, I don't know if it would work fine with the GTX 480...

EDIT : You may remember this bracelet. It is one of the very first object that I modelled for rendering with Octane in early 2010. Today I use it for my first trial with dispersion.

The original image has been rendered with PMC kernel in 2560x1440. It has been done in 2h 42min 55sec at 16000 s/px on two EVGA GTX 580 3GB, and scaled down to 1280x720. Hot pixel filter was set to 0.2.

Very nice Roubal, I think the metal could look better though, looks kind of washed out and maybe too smooth? I think it needs a darker base colour to give it more contrast.
I love the mottled multicoloured reflections in the ground surface, just beautiful.

I agree with you for the gold material. It looks a bit grey... Maybe it is because I increased the power of the hdr image used for lighting, or maybe it is as you say because of a too smooth material.
