285s are good cards from what I read, and the best one is by Palit - it's not overclocked (not a good idea for these uses), has dual fans and a heatsink... just what you would need for a card that is rendering full-tilt and getting hot. But they are very hard to find.
The next gen cards they were referring to were the gtx465 and gtx485 (i think I got those numbers right), not the quadro or tesla versions. Those will cost a boat load more and have at least double the memory capabilities. Hopefully they'll be coming out next month from what all the rumors keeps saying. Price point is still up in the air as they haven't released anything saying what they'll be, but I would imagine the 465 will go for around $300-400 US and the 485 for around $550-650. Just the impression I get from where things are now, and where they were when initially released. From what I've read they're supposed to bring something out right away that hits the higher-mid price point (gtx465) and then the big guns for those hard core gamers (gtx485). Of course this is all speculation. I'm just hoping they come out with something soon as I am getting itchy to upgrade and I'd hate to pick up a gtx275 if the next gen are going to be out in just a few weeks.
Having had a few quadros in the past I can say that they are generally great cards, though if you plan on doing any gaming you might find them a little lack luster by comparison. I am really interested in the tesla series as they are dedicated supercomputers really, not graphics cards at all. I wish their price point weren't out of reach or I'd pick one up. Maybe if I am able to get a few arch-vis deals with an architect I know I will pick one up in 6 months or so.
Radiance, is it still looking like v1 will be out this month? Will it have RIB support? I'm sure you're getting this a lot, so I am sorry if this is redundant.

Well my point has always been to try to keep octane accessible to anyone,
so i don't think we will ever abuse existing customers with such tactics.

It's confusing, here I heard people screaming target 'go commercial' avoid alternatives, but the reality is has an alternative price, you can hardly get both. One aim commercial, one goes with commercial prices, one aims alternative, and goes with alternative price.
Most talk on Indigo price as absolute term, and forget the underlaying technology and how many features it has or years on its shoulders, has a team behind, if Octane get bigger better featured and has a broader acceptance, prices will go up, invariably.

Well once the world sees the power of Octane, and a very attractive selling price, they will draw in more sales then if they were to sell it at even double the price. Selling at a higher prices cuts off the hobbyist and student, but the software might look more "professional." Lowering the price enables more people from all walks of life to pick it up and use it. It might not come off as "being as good as X program because X program costs 10 times as much" but power is power, and ability is ability, so when people learn that the renders are as good as program X, take 1/10th the time (gross estimation), and costs 1/10th the price, the bigger companies will jump in. I've dealt with this even here at my work (a college) where the management thinks that just because something costs more, or has a strong brand behind it, that it must be better, and I have to fight for anything other than that.

large resolutions are difficult with current GPU's, due to limited video ram.
however, this will soon change as there are already video cards apearing with larger video memory (1.8GB),
and soon 1,5GB and 3GB consumer cards.
We're currently starting with the 99 EURO beta program and we'll see where we go

Im sorry. Im not sure I understood. 4000*3000 with 32bpp pixels would take about 48Mb of video memory. What is the problem to render in Octane such big resolution on for example GTX260 (my card), which have 850 Mb?

I absolutly have no ideas... it should work... You should ask RadianceWhat is the problem to render in Octane such big resolution on for example GTX260 (my card)
