I've been checking the forums like every 12 seconds for any inkling of info on the new kernel  I need to get my mind off of this before I go crazy! I want the team to take all the time they need though, not rushing at all- it's just suspenseful!

Hi all,

Now that we have an importance sampling kernel, Roeland has added support for physically correct spectral dispersion to the specular material.
Here's a demo render, it cooked for 23 minutes. We still need to make more tests & optimizations but it works well already.
The test build will be released when all is done in a few days... (I'm not promising an exact day though ! :) )

Looks fantastic! Great work! :) Now Roeland can get busy on a SSS shading model haha

Seriously though when looking at this nice picture. You cant avoid the fact that there is alot of noise from specular/caustics etc. Is there a possibility to add adaptive sampling with a threshold for renders that once met the initial sampling value and starts looking for pixels neighbouring that are out of a contrast threshold ratio? The hotpixel removal tool, smudges the renders a little too much for my taste, and I love Octanes crispiness, but at the same time wants to get rid of noise. Being able to set Octane to a second pass rendering once initial pass samples has been done, only looking for "high contrast ( usually noise or out of focus edges)" pixels and their neighbours would be wonderful :)

Hi,

That's what the PMC kernel does, it's an adaptive sampling kernel.
There are multiple stages and features we need to add to make these types of scenes render the most efficient,
and PMC is a part of it, the other features are in the pipeline, will be added during the coming weeks and months, such as bidirectional path tracing, and for interiors, support for light portals. We also need to optimize what we are currently working on further.

Aah! Haha sweet music to my ears! Keep up the good work! Ooh the other renders will tremble once Kepler is out.

Wow, it looks great! It rendered 23 minutes on what hardware?

Just read about light portals on wiki , did not know, what it is....cant wait for them, they sound good.

Very excited! Cycles has nothing on Octane.
